THE RADIANT SAKURA

PART 1: THE PROPHECY

The sun was warm. A radiant symphony. A day of bliss, and a spring breeze with just enough movement in the air to keep you cool. The trees blushed of warm pinks and reds as the wind whispered through the Sakuras that adorned them.Peace. The dense forest ran as far as the eye could see. Seemingly falling beyond the horizon that carried the sun above. Tranquility. Everything in the land seemed perfect, to not be disturbed by a soul. However, beyond the stillness, within the dense woods of the blossoms shaded from the sun, a clamor made itself heard. The cries of Kitsune echoed against the tree bark, bouncing from wood to wood. A community of old and young, thriving in companionship and wisdom, played in a clearing of the forest — this was their home.Adorning the clearing were relics of legends past that embraced the history of those before them. Statues memorialized The Elders. Torii gates lined the edges of the forest, towering over the creatures.Among the clamoring, the adults at work were teaching the younglings the meaning of their existence, knowing they’d one day take their place and carry on their legacy. Lessons of their magic-filled past rang in the air. Caring for The Shrine was their responsibility. To maintain, to uphold, to protect. In the distance, a watchful eye observed her people. A life long lived, but filled with wisdom and prosperity. The Mother.Although not everyone’s mother, that was her title. To the adults, to the children. She led them through their abundant lives. They trusted her.Her shining white fur seemed to glisten in the sun. A magnificent contrast to the scarlet red markings that were scattered throughout her coat. Her nine tails rested in the soft grass below her. She had worked hard. Her days of rest deserved. As she lay resting in the sun, she shifted her eyes upon a youngling. Different from the others, his fur a blushing pink. An anomaly compared to the surrounding younglings who all had white fur. But this wasn’t what drew the attention of the wise fox.She had been watching him for weeks. Not just in physical form, but in her dreams.Visions. Nightmares. She knew this youngling was a part of the prophecy, a destiny with a future written in stone that could not be changed. But what will become of this young child?“Is everything okay, Mother?”Startled, not realizing she had been in a daze, Mother found herself face to face with Kiyoto. His pink fur now in front of her, in all its unique existence.“Ahem. Yes, Kiyo.” Mother replied. “Run along now. Your lessons have not finished for the day. There’s much to learn.”“Do I have to go back? Can’t you tell me more stories about The Elders?!” Kiyoto argued.“There’ll be plenty opportunity for that, child. Young Kitsune are rewarded for their efforts. All in due time.” Mother smiled back at Kiyoto.Begrudgingly, Kiyoto pranced back to the group to continue receiving his teachings.“He’s going to keep hounding you, you know? You’re too lenient with that one, Mother.” Another adult strolled gently up to her in disappointment. It was The Sage, Overseer of Kitsune teachings.“What’s a bit of leniency? They’re young, let them be a little boisterous, Professor.” Mother replied. “I don’t blame them, needing a break from your monotoned curriculum now and then. Wouldn’t you agree?” She asked jokingly. The Sage shifted his posture, clearly half insulted.“I’ll leave the history lessons for the ill-behaved children to you. I lack the patience that you seem to be full of these days.” The Sage replied.“However, respectfully, that’s not why I’m here.” He continued. “I’ve come to let you know it’s time. Another day is coming to a close and the sun falls. Are you ready for The Blessing?”Mother stood up slowly. Her bones aching of age. “Yes. Let’s begin.” She said with a sigh. Both Kitsune walked aside each other into the distance. Disappearing into the thickness of the wood. The sun beginning to dip below the horizon, turning the sky a crimson orange. What they were about to do was essential. A ritualistic practice that MUST occur every day. Otherwise, a prophecy awakens. It was called The Sacred Blessing. This blessing protected the Kitsune. It was a responsibility of The Elders for generations. Blessing the forest borders ensured The Darkness was kept afar and out of reach, preventing a war that once raged for ages. The legacy of The Shrine depended upon it. The Elders trusted it, and so did the Kitsune.Mother and The Sage knew the task at hand, as they had performed the ritual countless times before. They accepted this responsibility.Little did they know, this would be the last time…

PART 2: THE AWAKENING

“Run, Kiyoto! Run!” Cries of fear echoed in the distance. “You must fulfill the prophecy! For the future of our kind! Run!” The voice continued.“Mother?” Kiyoto replied to the echo.A burning sensation stung relentlessly in Kiyoto's side. Pain jolted him out of his sleep. Opening his eyes, looking above, embers fell from the sky, singeing his blush colored fur upon contact.Kiyoto stumbled to his feet, dazed and confused. Collecting his composure, he began to regain his senses.Upon standing, he looked around. Walls of fire roared in front of him. Fear came over his body as he realized his situation.Waves of heat swirled in a gust of wind past his face, burning as it continued to consume his surroundings. Kiyoto continued looking around in his den. It was on the brink of collapse.“Hello?!” Kiyoto shouted in the distance toward the rest of The Shrine. “I- I can’t see anything!”“I need to get out of here!” Kiyoto pondered in a panic.Above, the trees began to crackle, indicating their impending collapse. In front of him was a wall of flames. Threatening their powerful capabilities as they continued to burn.“What do I do?” He thoughtClosing his eyes and hesitating, Kiyoto jumped with faith through the flames, hoping he would make it. As if by chance, he narrowly avoided the falling trees of his den as they fell into themselves, crashing into another wall of flames behind him.Sighing with relief, he realized he had made it… so far.Looking around, Kiyoto assessed the situation. Flames roared violently through the trees. Burning the Sakuras that once adorned them. Their crimson bodies floating away into the sky. With cries of war, pain, and agony echoing in the distance, Kiyoto quickly came to his senses, realizing what had tragically ensued. The Shrine was under attack.Running to the clearing of The Shrine, Kiyoto jumped over collapsed trees, flames and burning foliage as he rushed to aid his fellow Kitsune.“I need to find Mother!” He said to himself. After what seemed like an eternity, Kiyoto approached the clearing. No longer a peaceful field of the sun’s embrace. It was now consumed by the chaos of heat and flames.“Kiyoto!” A male voice cried in the distance.“P- Professor?!” Kiyoto stuttered back, squinting to the other side of the clearing. The Sage stood in a defensive position, too far to reach without falling victim to the flames.“Find Mother! They’ve breached the perimeter!” The Grand Sage yelled back. “We MUST secure The Shrine!”Upon giving his instructions, two dark figures emerged from the wall of flames behind The Sage. Turning around, he became visibly fearful, slowly beginning to back up.The dark figures stood tall above him. Appearing almost similar to shadows. Their white eyes appearing blank, round, and emotionless. Sharp limbs adorned their bodies that were as long as their legs.Fear came over Kiyoto’s body.“I SAID GO! NOW!” The Sage screamed again toward him.Just as The Sage turned back toward the shadows, whimpers of agony echoed through the air as the two figures impaled him with their limbs.Within a single moment of pain, he was gone.“NO!” Kiyoto shouted. The dark figures turned toward him as his screams made his presence known.Kiyoto gasped in fear as he turned and ran the other way, choking back tears as he sprinted. He knew he needed to find Mother. As he ran, he assessed his situation based on his teachings.“The Shrine should be safe. How could it be attacked like this? The Sage spoke of a war that was once fought by our kind for hundreds of years against an army of darkness. Could this be them? The Dark Ones? Has the prophecy we learned in our teachings truly begun?”Kiyoto’s tears evaporated into the heat of the flames as he made his way to Mother’s den. His tail swaying in the embers behind him.Upon arriving, Mother was not in her den. He looked in the distance to see her lifeless on the ground.Sprinting to her, he called out to her in fear that she was already gone.“MOTHER!” He rushed over.“K- Kiyoto…” Mother replied painfully. Her fur was black and red from embers and blood that had been stained into her coat. Was it hers? Or the others?“Are you hurt? We can find help!” Kiyoto pleaded. “We have to go!”“Child… I- I need you to listen… carefully…” she struggled to speak, but continued “You are the prophecy we spoke of. Our teachings, o-our history, our… f- future.” Mother struggled.“I don’t- I don’t know what that means, Mother!” Kiyoto said tearfully. “Tell me what I need to do to save you!”“It was always you, ch-child. You possess… so much light in you.” Mother stared proudly into his eyes. “I knew this day would come… The Dark Ones… will not stop until you… fulfill your d-duty as the last of our kind.” Mother grunted in pain from her injuries.“Kiyoto… I need you… to take this charm.” Mother drew attention to the gold charm around her neck, her breathing now heavy. “In the forest, there is a gate… A portal… It will take you to safety, away from h-here, away… from them.”“I’m not leaving you!” Kiyoto shouted.“Kiyoto listen to me… you must go. I don’t know where it will take you, but The Elders will g-guide you -erghh!” Mother struggled to continue. “I will always be with you! We will a-all… be with you… Now go!”Just as she finished, a shadow emerged from the flames. Peering down at Kiyoto, its cold gaze struck fear into his body. He froze.“Kiyoto! GO!” Mother shouted. Before he could leave, the shadow drew one of its limbs into the air, without remorse or hesitation, and impaled Mother in front of Kiyoto’s eyes. Its blank stare unchanged. In an instant, their leader, their Mother, was slaughtered.Kiyoto knew he couldn’t stay. With the gold charm, he quickly ran away as he leapt through a clearing in the flames. Leaving behind The Shrine, his family and his only home.As he ran through the forest, flames in the distance behind him, questions stirred in his mind. Where was he going? How does he fulfill The Prophecy? What about his home?Mothers words echoed in his head. “The Elders will guide you!”As he ran for what felt like an eternity, Kiyoto felt a presence within the forest. Was it them? The Elders?Without warning, a magic emerged from the trees, like a gust of wind, guiding him on his path. Swirls of Sakura colored dust made itself known, leading Kiyoto as he ran. After a bit further, his attention was stolen by something in the distance. Something he recognized, it was a silhouette from his teachings. A Torii gate, appearing from nothing.Kiyoto slowed his pace as he gazed at what he was witnessing. The dust blew through the wind and rushed under the Torii gate before exploding into a wall of magic. It was a portal.“Just like she said…” Kiyoto muttered.Trusting his instincts and the teachings of The Elders, Kiyoto shut his eyes tightly, not knowing what would come next. After little hesitation, he ran into the portal, refusing to stop, moving his feet until he couldn’t anymore. His destination was unknown. His future was uncertain. However, he kept his faith knowing that Mother would protect him. He kept faith in The Shrine and his teachings. All he could do was hope that one day he would return to reclaim his home.
